Two things get mixed up in most answers to this question. The hair has a lifespan, set by its grade and how it's treated. The attachment has a separate lifespan, set by how fast your own hair grows: anything bonded, taped or clamped to your hair moves away from the scalp at roughly a centimetre a month and has to be refitted. Pieces that sit on a wire or clip in have no attachment lifespan at all, which is why the same hair tends to last longer in them: it's never heated, glued or pulled during a refit.

1. The hair grade
Remy human hair is collected with every cuticle facing the same direction. That is the whole reason it stays smooth, takes heat and survives washing. "Human hair" without the word Remy usually means mixed-direction hair that has been acid-stripped and silicone-coated; it feels lovely for the first few washes and then tangles as the coating wears off. Synthetic fibre can't be heat-styled and frizzes at the ends within weeks. If a piece is under about £40 for a full-length set, assume it isn't Remy.
2. How much hair is in the piece
A heavier piece has more hair to lose before it looks thin. Our invisible wire extensions run from 90g at 12 inches to 120g at 18 inches; sets built for "thick hair" at 200g plus last longer on paper but pull on fine hair. The Lightweight 45g version exists for exactly that reason.
3. Whether anything is attached to your own hair
Every refit of tape, bonds or rings involves solvent, heat or a clamp, and every one of them takes a little from the extension hair as well as your own. A piece that sits on a wire or clips in is only ever brushed and washed, which is why the same grade of hair lasts longer worn that way.
4. Washing frequency
Extensions don't produce oil, so they don't need washing like your own hair. Every 8 to 10 wears is about right for daily wearers; every few weeks for occasional wear. Over-washing is the fastest way to dry the ends out.
5. Heat
Remy hair takes curling tongs and straighteners, but at or below 180°C and always with a heat protectant. Above that the cuticle lifts and the hair dulls, exactly as your own would.
6. Storage and sleeping
Hang the piece or lay it flat in its bag, brushed, with the ends free. Don't sleep in it: friction against a pillow is what creates the matted ends that get blamed on "bad hair".
The routine that gets a full year out of a piece
- Brush before and after every wear, from the ends up, with a soft bristle or loop brush.
- Wash every 8 to 10 wears in lukewarm water with a sulphate-free shampoo. Don't rub; smooth the shampoo down the lengths.
- Condition from the mid-lengths down and leave it a few minutes. Keep conditioner off any clips or the weft.
- Use a hair oil on the ends once a week. Extensions have no scalp oil to replace what washing removes.
- Air-dry most of the way, then style. Keep tools at 180°C or under with heat protectant.
- Avoid alcohol-heavy sprays and volumising or colour-correcting shampoos, which strip Remy hair.
- Store it hanging or flat, never bunched in a drawer, and never sleep in it.

Signs it's time to replace a piece
- The ends stay dry and frizzy after a wash and oil.
- Visible thinning at the ends compared with the top of the weft.
- Tangles reappear within an hour of brushing.
- The colour has lifted or gone brassy (usually from sun or chlorine, both of which affect extensions faster than your own hair).
- Clips, wire loops or wefts have stretched or come loose. On our pieces the wire and clips are replaceable for a few pounds, so this one rarely means a new piece.
