Updated September 2026. Based on 301 verified Naturyl customer reviews. Thirty-two of those reviews are from women who describe their hair as fine, thin or fragile — including two who sent a piece back for being too heavy, which is the most useful thing in this guide.
The short answer
The best hair extensions for fine hair are the lightest ones that attach to nothing: two small clip-in pieces at the sides, or a 45g lightweight single piece on a clear wire. Weight is the whole decision. Fine hair cannot carry, hide or grip a heavy piece, and every method that clamps, tapes or bonds to your strands is asking the thinnest hair you have to hold the most weight.
If you take one number away: a full clip-in set is typically 120g to 160g. Our lightest piece is 45g. On fine hair that difference is the difference between "nobody noticed" and a returns label.
Weight is the decision, not brand or method
Fine hair is not the same as thin hair. Fine describes the diameter of each strand; thin describes how many you have. You can have a lot of fine hair. But both share one constraint: a fine strand snaps and slips at a lower load than a coarse one, so the grams matter more than anything on the label.
How much hair you are actually putting on
Weight of the piece, to scale
A full set can be more than three times the weight of our lightest wire — and unlike a wire, all of it hangs from your own strands.
That last point is the one that gets missed. A wire piece rests on your head; a clip-in set hangs off your hair. So the same 120g behaves completely differently depending on what is carrying it, and on fine hair the difference shows up as clip-point thinning within a few months.

"I used to enjoy having thick hair, but since the menopause my hair has thinned significantly. I have tried clip in hair extensions, unfortunately these pull on my already fragile hair. My new 'wire' extension is absolutely amazing!"Jacqueline B., verified buyer

Buy short: why length is the thing that hurts fine hair
Length multiplies weight. Every extra two inches adds roughly ten grams, and all of it pulls downward on the same fine strands. So the length decision is really a weight decision, and it is the one that decides whether you can wear a piece daily or only for an evening.
+10g
of extra pull for every two inches of length you add
12 in
the length to start at unless your hair is past your collarbone

The rule that follows: buy the smallest thing that solves the problem. It is also the cheapest way in — at £89 the 45g lightweight is our lowest-priced wire, below every standard length.

Weight is half of it. The other half is that fine hair is slippery, and clips designed for average hair slide straight out of it. One customer put it better than any spec sheet could.
"I was sceptical about these extensions as my hair is so fine I cant even use hair slides as they just fall out. Well… I am amazed… not only do they stay firmly in place but they don't feel heavy or drag on my hair."Sophie S., verified buyer
- 1Never fit on freshly washed hair. Clean fine hair has no grip at all. Day-two hair, or a mist of dry shampoo at the clip points, roughly doubles how long a piece stays put.
- 2Backcomb a tiny anchor. A few seconds of teasing at the root gives a clip something to close on. Without it, a clip on fine hair is gripping about four strands.
- 3Use the velcro clips on a wire. A wire that drifts backward through the day rides up and shows. Two small clips at the sides hold the line without adding tension.
- 4Move the clip a centimetre each day. The one habit that prevents clip-point thinning. Fine strands recover fine if they get days off.
- 5Thin the piece before you give up on it. If a weft looks denser than your own hair, a hairdresser can take weight out of it in ten minutes. Several of our customers have done it themselves with scissors.
- 6Take it out at night, every night. Overnight friction does more damage to fine hair than a full day of wear, and it is the one rule that costs nothing.
What women with fine hair told us
We sell these pieces, so weigh the following accordingly. All are verbatim from verified reviews, including the one that did not work out.
"Fantastic!! Colour match to perfection! I have super fine hair and this makes a huge difference! Looked around a bought several pieces before this one, absolutely do not hesitate to get one!"Claudine C., verified buyer
"My hair was non existent around my face. My hair is very fine and they are fine and lightweight — love them."Joanne O., verified buyer
"I ordered the medium 14" in luscious blonde… The hair was great, but with having fine hair I just wasn't that comfortable with so much hair. So I returned the product."Chantal L., verified buyer
Chantal's review is a five-star review of a product she sent back, which tells you the piece was not faulty — it was the wrong weight. She bought the middle length. Had she started at 12 inch, or at 45g, the story probably ends differently. That is the single most common correctable mistake in fine-hair extension buying, and it costs a return to learn.
When extensions are not the answer for fine hair
If your scalp shows through your top layer. Fine hair still hides a piece perfectly well as long as there is enough of it. Once you can see scalp through the hair when it falls loose, there is nothing to hide a wire under, and a topper is the right product.
If the problem is your parting. Every extension hangs below the parting, so none of them widen or fill it. That is a topper or a scalp-shading powder.
If your hair has changed recently. Fine hair you have always had is one thing; hair that has become fine over months is another. See a GP first — the NHS hair loss guidance covers when it is worth investigating. A piece covers thinning; it does not treat it.

What are the best hair extensions for fine hair?
The lightest pieces that attach to nothing: two small front clip-in pieces, or a 45g lightweight single piece on a clear wire. Both add fullness without hanging weight from fine strands, and both come out at night.
Can you get hair extensions with very fine hair?
Yes, provided your own top layer is dense enough to cover the piece. Fine is not the same as sparse — plenty of fine hair hides a wire easily. The test is whether you can see scalp through your hair when it falls loose.
How many grams of extensions should I use for fine hair?
Start with two small front pieces or a 45g wire, and only go heavier if it looks too subtle. A standard 90g piece suits fine hair that there is plenty of; anything approaching a full 120g to 160g clip-in set is more than fine hair should carry daily.
Do clip-in extensions ruin fine hair?
Small pieces with one clip each rarely do. Full sets with six to eight wefts can, because the same fine strands carry all the weight every day. Moving the clip position slightly each day and never sleeping in them removes most of the risk.
Why do my extensions keep falling out of my fine hair?
Because clean fine hair has almost no grip. Fit on day-two hair, tease a small anchor at each clip point, and use the velcro clips with a wire piece. That combination fixes nearly every slipping complaint we see.
Which is better for fine hair, a wire piece or clip-ins?
A wire rests on your head rather than hanging from your hair, so it puts no tension on your roots — better if you want fullness through the lengths. Small clip-in pieces are lighter still and easier to hide, but only fill the sides and front. Many customers end up with both.
