The short answer

Remy hair is human hair collected so that every strand still points the way it grew, with its cuticle — the outer scale layer — left intact. That one detail is why Remy hair stays smooth instead of matting: when the scales all lie in the same direction they slide past each other rather than catching.

The part worth knowing before you spend: "Remy" describes how hair was collected, not how good it is. It is a floor, not a grade. Nobody audits the word, there is no certificate behind it, and it tells you nothing about how heavily the hair was processed, how it was coloured, or whether it suits your head. Treat it as the first question, not the last.

What the cuticle actually is

Every strand of hair is wrapped in overlapping scales, like tiles on a roof. That layer is the cuticle, and it is what makes hair feel smooth when you run a hand down it and rough when you run a hand up it.

Hair is usually collected in bulk, and the cheap way to do it leaves strands pointing in whatever direction they happened to fall. Put two strands together with their scales facing opposite ways and they catch on each other. Do that across a whole weft and you get the matting at the nape that people blame on the brand, the weather or their own hair.

Collecting hair so that root stays with root takes time and costs more, which is the real reason Remy hair is more expensive. The alternative is to strip the cuticle off entirely with acid — that also stops the tangling, and it is why some very cheap extensions feel wonderful for a fortnight and then feel like straw. Hair with no cuticle has nothing left to protect it.

What a cuticle looks like when it goes

How to check it is really Remy, before you spend

Since the word is unregulated, the useful skill is testing the claim rather than trusting it. None of this needs equipment.

  1. 1Run it both ways between your fingers. Take a small section and slide your fingers from top to bottom, then bottom to top. Real Remy hair feels noticeably smoother in one direction than the other, because the scales are all lying the same way. Hair that feels identical both ways has had its cuticle stripped.
  2. 2Wash it once and see what happens. Stripped hair often behaves beautifully out of the packet thanks to a silicone coating, and turns dry and tangly the first time that coating washes off. If a piece is going to disappoint you, it usually does it at the first wash — which is exactly why a returns window that survives one wash matters.
  3. 3Let the price sanity-check the claim. Collecting hair root-to-root is slow, manual work. A full head of genuine Remy human hair for the price of a takeaway is telling you something, and it is not that you found a bargain.
  4. 4Check it takes heat and colour like hair. Human hair curls with a wand and can be taken darker with a semi-permanent. Synthetic cannot do either. If a listing is vague about heat styling, that is usually the answer.
  5. 5Read the reviews at three months, not three days. Everyone is happy on day one. The reviews worth reading are the ones written after a few washes, because that is when cuticle quality shows up.

Four things "Remy" does not mean

It is not a quality grade. There is no scale, no inspector and no certificate. Grading systems you see quoted online are invented by whoever is selling. Remy is a yes-or-no description of how the hair was collected.

It is not the same as virgin hair. Virgin means never chemically treated. Remy hair is usually coloured to reach a shade range, and that is fine — but the two words answer different questions, and only one of them is about tangling.

It does not promise a particular lifespan. How long a piece lasts depends far more on heat, brushing and how often you wash it than on the label. Remy hair treated badly still dies; non-Remy hair treated gently still tangles.

It does not mean it will suit you. The most common reason an order goes back is shade, not fibre. Perfect Remy hair in the wrong colour is still the wrong purchase, which is why a free colour match is worth more than a label.

Keeping the cuticle you paid for

Extension hair gets no oil from a scalp and cannot repair itself, so the cuticle it arrives with is all it will ever have. Two habits protect it, and they are the same two that appear again and again in our own reviews.

Brush from the ends upwards, with a soft brush or a wide comb. Dragging a brush from the top down forces every tangle into a tighter knot and lifts the scales as it goes. Start at the bottom, work up in sections, and hold the weft while you do it so the pull is on your hand, not the seam.

Wash it less than you think, and gently. A piece that is not attached to a scalp does not get greasy at the root, so it needs washing far less often than your own hair. Use a mild shampoo, condition the lengths, and let it dry naturally where you can.

What does Remy hair mean?

Is Remy hair real human hair?
