Before and after: fine blonde hair in her 50s, then with Face-Framing Layers adding fullness

Hair Extensions for Women Over 50 and Through Menopause: What Works and What Damages

Published September 2026. Based on 487 verified Naturyl customer reviews and 12 months of UK order data. This is a buying guide, not medical advice; if your hair loss is sudden or patchy, see your GP first.

The best hair extensions for women over 50, and for anyone whose hair has thinned through perimenopause or menopause, are pieces that attach to nothing: a small clip-in piece for a thinning front, or a single-piece extension that sits on a clear wire under your own top layer. They add fullness without pulling on roots that are already shedding more than they used to, they come off every night, and the hair underneath keeps growing. Tape-ins, micro rings, nano rings and bonds add weight and tension to exactly the hair you are trying to keep, and most women who write to us about menopausal thinning have already had a bad experience with one of them.

Why hair thins around menopause, briefly

Falling oestrogen shortens the growth phase of each hair and lets androgens act more strongly on the follicle, so strands grow finer and shed sooner. The effect shows first at the parting, the temples and the front hairline, and the hair that remains is often drier and more fragile than it was at 40. The NHS guide to hair loss covers the patterns worth checking with a GP; everything below assumes the common, gradual thinning rather than sudden patchy loss.

Three things follow for extensions. Anything that hangs weight on individual strands is riskier than it was at 30. The shade you need has probably changed, because grey or highlighted-over-grey hair is cool-toned and multi-tonal. And you usually need less hair than you think: most women in this group want their own hair to look full and healthy, not dramatically long.

What women over 50 tell us

Around one in five of our reviews mention menopause, age or hair loss through illness. The pattern in them is consistent: previous extensions made things worse, a piece that attaches to nothing made things better.

"I used to enjoy having thick hair, but since the menopause my hair has thinned significantly. I have tried clip in hair extensions, unfortunately these pull on my already fragile hair. My new 'wire' extension is absolutely amazing! So easy to put on, the transformation is miraculous!"

Jacqueline B., verified buyer

"Being peri menopause and having used alternative extensions previously my hair is not in great shape and has thinned a lot. These hair extensions have been a life changer. So easy to put in and not having to worry about the damage it could do to my hair. I can now try and get my hair growing and strong again."

Maria C., verified buyer

"After nearly ruining my own hair with nanos and weaves for the last two years… at 58 years of age, my own hair is thinning. With Naturyl, I FINALLY found extensions that have beautiful volume, a gorgeous colour blend and most importantly a natural look!"

Bethany K., verified buyer

"I love the fact that it comes in 12 inch length, as I am a bit older and don't suit longer extensions. Putting the extension in and out is so simple and only takes seconds. Better still it causes no damage to my hair."

Every option, ranked for thinning hair after 50

Option What it attaches to Good for Watch out for
Face-framing clip-in pieces Two small clips, hidden under the parting Thinning at the front, temples and hairline; the most common menopause pattern Needs a little hair on top to cover the clips
Invisible wire extension Nothing; a clear wire sits on the head under your top layer Overall fullness and length; fine hair (choose the 45g Lightweight) Needs enough hair on top to cover the wire at the back
Side and crown fill-in pieces Small clips Specific sparse patches at the sides or crown Same clip-coverage rule
Full clip-in sets (6 to 8 wefts) Many clips on the same spots daily Thick hair wanting length Weight and repeated clipping on fragile roots; several customers switched away from these
Tape-ins, micro or nano rings, keratin bonds Your own strands, for 6 to 8 weeks at a time Healthy hair with a stylist you trust Constant tension on shedding hair; heat, solvent or clamps at every refit
Toppers and wigs Clips or a full cap When the crown or parting is too sparse to hide a wire or clips Cost and heat; but the right answer once coverage is the problem

How to choose between the top three

If the thinning is at the front

Start with face-framing pieces. They sit where menopausal thinning shows first, they clip into the two spots that usually still have hair, and at £39.95 they are the lowest-risk way to find out whether extensions work for you. They are also the product most of our over-50 customers buy first.

If your whole head has gone finer

An invisible wire extension adds fullness everywhere at once. Choose the Lightweight 12 inch (45g) if your hair is fine: it is half the weight of the standard piece, sits flatter, and is easier to hide. Twelve inches is the length most women over 50 choose; it sits at the shoulders and reads as your own hair, not an extension.

If there are specific sparse patches

Fill-in pieces cover the sides or crown without a full piece. Many customers pair them with face-framing pieces.

When to stop and consider a topper

Every clip or wire piece needs some of your own hair on top to cover it. If the parting or crown has thinned to the point where a wire or a clip would show through, a topper is the honest answer, and we will say so if you send us a photo. Two of our reviews are from customers who returned a piece for exactly this reason, and were refunded.

Getting the shade right when there's grey in it

Our best-selling shade across 34,000 pieces last year was Silver Blonde, an ash blonde with silvery lowlights. It is number one because it is what women use to blend grey with highlights, and it tells you the rule: once grey is in the mix, the match is cool-toned and usually multi-tonal. Mostly white or silver hair blends with Mature Silver or Ivory. Salt-and-pepper brown blends with Grey worn under a Cool Brown top layer. If you are unsure, send a photo taken by a window to our free colour match; exchanges are free if the shade isn't right.

Wearing extensions on fragile hair without harm

  1. Size the wire loosely. It should sit snug, not tight. A tight wire is what causes the headaches some people blame on the product.
  2. Skip the optional clips on a wire piece unless you genuinely need them. Most customers find the wire alone holds.
  3. Take it off at night. Never sleep in any extension; friction and tension overnight do more harm than a day's wear.
  4. Give your hair days off. The whole point of a removable piece is that your own hair gets to rest and grow.
  5. Keep heat under 180°C and off your own roots. Style the piece and your hair together only once it's in.
  6. Move clip positions slightly day to day on face-framing pieces so the same strands don't carry the weight every time.
  7. Treat your own hair, not just the extension. Extensions cover thinning; they don't stop it. A GP or trichologist can help with the underlying cause.

Questions we're asked most by women over 50

Can I get hair extensions if my hair is thinning or falling out?

Yes, if the thinning is gradual and you still have hair on top to cover a clip or a wire. Choose a piece that attaches to nothing, so it adds fullness without loading the strands that are shedding. If the loss is sudden or in patches, see your GP first; if the crown or parting is too sparse to hide a piece, a topper is the better choice.

What are the best hair extensions for menopause hair?

Face-framing clip-in pieces for a thinning front, and a lightweight invisible wire extension for overall fullness. Both come off nightly and put no tension on your roots. Avoid tape-ins, rings and bonds while your hair is shedding more than usual.

Do hair extensions make thinning worse?

Methods that attach to your own strands can, through traction, weight and the heat or solvent used at refits. Pieces that sit on a wire or clip into a couple of spots do not pull on the roots, and taking them off at night lets your hair recover.

What length suits women over 50?

Most choose 12 inches. It sits at the shoulders, adds fullness rather than drama, and blends with the shorter cuts many women move to as hair thins. Length exchanges are free if you want to go longer.

How do I match extensions to grey hair?

Grey is cool-toned, so match to an ash or silver shade: Silver Blonde for grey blended with highlights, Mature Silver or Ivory for mostly white hair, Grey under Cool Brown for salt-and-pepper brown. A free photo colour match takes the guesswork out.

Will a wire show through fine hair?

It can if the hair on top is very sparse at the back of the head. The 45g Lightweight piece sits flatter, and a lightly back-combed top layer covers it for most people. If it still shows, we'd rather tell you that before you buy: send us a photo.
